Remembering Charity Organisations
Posted on 5th, February 2012
Remembering charity organisations in your will is easy, even if you have already made a will. It's also a very good way to donate to charities as they can get all the money you want to give them with the tax man getting nothing. In most cases there will be no inheritance tax on a charity donation made in your will.
Most of us think of our wills as being a document that outlines which family member gets what of your worldly goods after you die. This is broadly true of course, but some people like to leave something to a good cause as well. The family, especially those who depend on you, should always be provided for first and foremost, but if there is anything left to spare, making a donation to your favourite charity by remembering charity organisations of your choice in your will can help enormously.
Many of us never get around to making a will. This is not a good idea. It means that your estate will be left in turmoil when you die. It is always better to tidy your affairs in plenty of time. This need not be a morbid thing. Far from it! Treat it like any chore that needs doing. It can be hard to get motivated sometimes, but putting it off will never make it go away. Just do it.
Remembering Charity Organisations via Legacies
If you decide to simply make donations to charity organisations while you are still alive, that's fine. They will appreciate it. But you can maximise the effect of that by leaving a legacy gift in your will. You could, perhaps, sponsor some part of the charity's needs if they require certain items to operate. In that way you would know where your money is going. It's also possible that your name could be remembered in some way as being associated with the item you sponsor.
You don't have to wait until you are old, or older, before you make your will. It isn't an old person's thing at all. It's something that every living person should do. As you grow older you can easily modify or change your will to better reflect your changing circumstances, and so keep up to speed on your life's situation.
If the worst happens and you are suddenly taken in perhaps an accident, tragic though that will be for your family, at least they will have your up to date will to properly finalise your estate. And if you have left something to charity organisation as well, they can continue to do the good work they do and others will benefit from your donation in time.
